Ocean.
When we are old will you remember
the sea, the light
the contact
with one other, the alignment of dreams
coming true
and that seagull that watched
me hold my hair back
as the wind grew.
When we are old will you remember
the sea, the light.
The alignment of dreams
coming true
& that seagull watching
as the wind grew.
Maybe we stay here
watch paint peel, remember,
while rust blooms
and that cold blue falls over.
WHY COFFEE?
A few weeks ago via social media I asked, “Why coffee?” The responses are below.
morning me time ~ it’s like a warm hug ~ community, sharing time/space/thoughts ~ coffee brings people together! ~ tastes soooo good ~ life, happiness ~ tea (ha)! ~ journey so many people are involved from farm to cup ~ coffee is connection ~ warmth, satisfaction, love, comfort ~ connection ~ ritual ~ tasty ~ but chai! and donuts
All of the responses define the daily experience for us.
I tell my friends and family, business is good but the people are everything. There’s a belief that with opening a business the end goal is to prosper, expand, grow and make it to a point where you don’t have to work so hard and just sit back and enjoy the “success.” There’s some truth to that of course but there’s a lot that can be lost. Last Fall we moved locations (with hesitation)
and from our new location I can’t smell the sea air. Gusts of wind don’t push sand into our service window. My friend doesn't stop by for his chai blasting his portable speaker and sharing his latest wisdom on how to conquer your inner demons.
I don’t see Kim walking her dog when I first pull up. I don’t see Ed after his morning walk or catch up on what his grandkids are up to while I make his large matcha. My son doesn’t stroll up barefoot after running across the Great Highway with sand in his hair. We don’t order tacos through door dash and have them delivered to “the orange and blue truck on the corner."
If I could change one thing it would be to somehow stay on my corner of Lincoln and La Playa and also be twice as busy, like we are now. On the flip side - at the new spot on JFK there are streams of kids on tiny bikes + music from a guitarist + giant yellow adirondack chairs + the most glorious tree right behind where the truck is parked with long reddish roots dangling (like a banyan) that has a cave-like center that is face-like. We’ve made new friends with stories that connect us + new employees that are full of life & creativity and energy + the Conservatory of Flowers is just a few steps away with its castle ways where I daydreamed as a child. We see it all regularly.
the ebbs & flows of coffee trucking life.
